Saving heritage whilst exposing people to centuries-old spiritual tradition
Between 2018 and 2020 Inteko led a restoration project to rehabilitate a 500-year old garden within the Franciscan Friary complex in the heart of Rabat: 2, 172.6 square metres dotted with citrus and various fruit trees, olive trees, vines and old structures that needed renovation. The project aimed at bringing back the idea of the garden as a community space.
Works were carried forward with the help of a number of volunteers (mostly young people) and a full-time employed gardener. Cultivations were grown according to permaculture principles, aiming to sustain the local religious community and process surplus for sales. Staff was trained through specially designed courses featuring sustainability and permaculture principles.
